Fun Fall Activities in the Durham Region

fall in Durham
As the days begin to shorten and the sun’s warmth begins to fade, it comes time to say goodbye to summer and start looking towards the next season. The end of summer is not quite so depressing with these fun and exciting activities to look forward to in the Durham Region this fall:

Bowmanville’s Applefest

Taking place in downtown Bowmanville, Applefest is a street festival that celebrates anything and everything to do with apples. Local vendors will be displaying numerous varieties of apples, and you’ll be able to treat yourself to some fresh-pressed apple cider, as well as homemade apple pies and crisps, apple fritters and caramel apples. There will also be unique gifts and crafts, carnival rides and street performances.

Doors Open Oshawa

Explore the hidden nooks and crannies of some of Durham’s most historical and famous sites during Doors Open Oshawa. On September 26th from 10-4 you’ll be granted access to some of the most interesting locales in Durham’s towns and rural areas, where you’ll learn interesting facts and stories about Durham’s past.

Visit a pumpkin patch

No fruit or vegetable is more representative of fall than the pumpkin. Whether it’s carving the winning pumpkin at a Halloween competition, roasting pumpkin seeds, or baking a delicious pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving dinner, the pumpkin is the unrivaled star of autumn. Knox’s Pumpkin Farm and Watson Farm Ltd. are great places to pick out the perfect pumpkin to adorn your front doorstep.

Get lost in a corn maze

Your kids will love getting lost (and hopefully finding their way out!) of the giant 8 acre corn maze at Pingle’s Farm Market or the sprawling 10 acre corn maze at Cooper’s CSA Farm. Brook’s Farm also has a Fall Fun Festival where you can partake in a corn maze, pumpkin cannon show and wagon rides.

34th Annual Oshawa Fall Art Festival

From October 2nd to 4th the Oshawa Fall Art Festival is the place to be for art lovers in the Durham Region. Talented painters, designers and sculptors will be showcasing and selling their work. The festival is located on Simcoe St. in North Oshawa and admission is free.

Get Outdoors

Fall is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the crisp autumn air and vibrant colours of the season. Go for an afternoon hike through the Ganaraska Forest, Long Sault Conservation Area or Darlington Provincial Park, where you can experience firsthand the unparalleled beauty of the autumn leaves and the changing face of Durham’s landscape.
